Narwold, nursing alumni lead summit at UCLA
July 14, 2005
KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo Associate Professor of Nursing Lynda Narwold will be lead facilitator for a “Future Medicine Leaders Summit” at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) on July 18–27. Some 225 high school students from the United States and other nations will attend to learn about medical ethics and careers.
Four recent IU Kokomo graduates will serve as paid group facilitators at the summit—Gail Blainey of Noblesville, Bonnie Ripberger of Tipton, and Kokomo residents Jessica Chrisley and John Kjeldsen. All received Associate of Science in Nursing degrees in May.
“Our graduates will get to practice the communication and teaching skills they learned at IU Kokomo. And, they can make a huge impact in recruiting these high school students to health care fields,” Narwold said.
The 10-day summit will be “intense, with not a lot of time to play,” Narwold said. Participants will visit a Los Angeles medical center, a research lab, and a medical school. Medical professionals will address the gathering, presenting ethical and legal considerations in organ transplants, gene therapy, and other heath care issues.
Narwold has made her own contribution to the sessions on medical ethics. She suggested that, in addition to looking at the Hippocratic Oath taken by physicians, summit participants also study a similar statement of principles that guide professional nurses, the Nightingale Pledge.
The summit is sponsored by People-to-People, an organization founded in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. People-to-People organizes international and domestic travel programs for students and adults with the mission of enhancing global understanding. Narwold has participated in an Adult Ambassadors trip to Australia, and has facilitated People-to-People leadership conferences in Washington, D.C., aimed at middle school students.
