KOKOMO, Ind.—A poem written by IU Kokomo student Paul Eccles has been accepted for publication in an anthology to be published by the International Library of Poetry and its Web site poetry.com.

Titled “Black and White,” Eccles' poem also earned him recognition by the National Campaign for Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Alabama.

A Kokomo resident, Eccles composed the 10-line poem for an IUPUI online class focused on racial issues. The poem addresses the human “struggle” to move beyond misconceptions and prejudices based on skin color. It concludes

Love knows no color. . .
What is black what is white is only on the outside.

Eccles started taking classes in IU Kokomo's Division of General Studies in fall 2005 after moving from New Mexico to Indiana. “I had taken several college classes before, but hadn't finished a degree,” he said. “I chose General Studies so I could complete a degree more quickly.”

Eccles likes the variety of classes available through General Studies, such as the summer session courses he is taking in ethics and children's literature. He also appreciates how, with flexible scheduling, classes are “geared to older adults, as well as to younger students.”
