Narwold praises counselors, community for 'best camp ever'
KOKOMO, Ind.—Participants in the 2005 Camp Eeze-the-Wheeze and KIDDS Kamp in Kokomo may have the chance to see themselves on television this winter. An Indiana University video crew was on hand June 15 when Clarian Health's Lifeline Helicopter flew in to visit the 28 campers, gathered at Kokomo's Jackson Morrow Park. IU Kokomo School of Nursing faculty and students staff the camps, which help youngsters learn to live with asthma and diabetes.
Video highlights of the camps will be included as part of a televised halftime show during the 2005–2006 IU men's basketball season.
Seventeen counselors—students of the IU Kokomo School of Nursing—contributed greatly ot make the 2005 camp session “the best we ever had,” said coordinator Lynda Narwold.
“I couldn't have asked for better counselors, and we had the largest attendance and the greatest level of community involvement ever,” said Narwold, an associate clinical professor of nursing.
Counselors for 2005 included Jamie Misner of Carbon; Liz Funk of Galveston; Kristin Stahlke of Fishers; Kristina Fredrick and Kelly O'Connor of Indianapolis; Katie Cohee, Tinnie Coleman, and Kayla Rosseter of Kokomo; Jacinta Langley of Logansport; Jennifer Moore of Marion; Britney Racine of Noblesville; Sheena Van Wormer of Peru; JaNay Hughes of Rochester; Livi Crisler of Sheridan; Angela Selleck of Wabash; Monisola Bolarin of Westfield; and Samantha Pugh of Winamac.
“Staff of the Kokomo Parks Department and members of the Kokomo Fire Department and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) were extremely helpful in securing a landing space for the Lifeline helicopter,” Narwold said. The Lifeline crew of pilot, physician, EMT, and flight nurse generously answered questions, she added. “Everyone got to look inside the helicopter. Our students were fascinated talking to the flight nurse about what her job entails.”
Several area health care providers volunteered to lead educational camp sessions. They included IU Kokomo alumna Ann Ditty, R.N., A.S.N., of Howard Regional Health System; Dr. Eric O'Banion and Martha Kinney, R.N.P., of North Central Pediatrics; dietician Ann Obenchain; certified respiratory therapist Tom Harrison of American Health Network; and Steve Schaller of Allen and Hanburys. Additional help came from CVS Pharmacy on Markland Avenue, the Corner Pub, and the respiratory department of St. Vincent Health St. Joseph Hospital. Supporting education for area children with asthma, The Thomas Bly Foundation has been a major contributor to Camp Eeze-the-Wheeze since its founding in 1996.
