KOKOMO, Ind.—IU Kokomo has granted a fellowship to Professor of Chemistry Kasem K. Kasem, Ph.D., for a summer research project titled “Photoelectrochemical Studies on Mixtures of Stationary Cadmium and Zinc Chalcogenides.” In the study, Kasem hopes to create new, inexpensive semiconductor materials that can be used for photoconversion of solar radiation. “Efficient use of solar energy is in great demand nowadays,” he said. Working on campus, Kasem will mold solid solutions of cadmium and zinc chalcogenides into stationary disks to serve as photo-electrodes for photoelectrochemical cells. His research will test the photoelectrochemical behavior and the stability of the materials. Delphi Delco Electronics Systems will provide some lab assistance for a portion of the work. “This work is a continuation of some research I did in the past; however, this is the first summer to work in this type of research,” Kasem said. He has published two articles in the field of photoelectrochemistry. Kasem will also mentor student Ty Woodhouse of Kokomo in an Undergraduate Research Summer Institute (URSI) project, studying electro-polymerization.
