KOKOMO, Ind.—Works by Kokomo portrait artist Glenna Pleasant are on display now through July 31, in the Artist Spotlight window, fronting the IU Kokomo Art Gallery.

The display includes examples of the more than 300 commissioned portraits Pleasant has completed, as well as renderings of wildlife, flowers, landscapes and pets. Her work in oil, pastels, pencil and watercolor have won several awards and filled five one-woman exhibits over the last 10 years.

“Color is one of the greatest joys of life to me, and I use it generously,” Pleasant said. “People and faces are my true passion, and oil painting, my choice of medium. However, I have never been able to follow the advice of art marketing experts and confine myself to one subject or medium.”

Pleasant’s fascination with art began when she was 4 years old. “I got into big trouble for climbing to the top of a cabinet to get the pretty postcards I had been forbidden to touch,” she said. She sold “cute drawings” to classmates in grade school but later chose medical technology as a profession. Finally, in 1984 Pleasant enrolled in a painting class, where she was “immediately at home with my dormant love of art.”

In the belief that “variety keeps life exciting,” both for herself and her patrons, Pleasant recently has branched out into fantasy images of angels and fairies. “Unlike many artists, I enjoy the challenge of creating pieces to please others and welcome the opportunity to paint client’s dreams or to complement a room’s décor,” she said. “My philosophy about art is that it should always bring joy to the viewer and strike a chord of both familiarity and new discovery.”

The Gallery’s current exhibit “Once Upon a Time . . .” features artwork created by area high school students. It runs through June 22. The Gallery then closes for the summer, reopening August 17, with a juried exhibition of regional artists.

The IU Kokomo Art Gallery is located inside the Kelley Student Center. All exhibits and activities are free and open to the public. Hours are Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Wednesdays, until 8 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call (765) 455-9523 or visit www.iuk.edu/art gallery.
