SPSS software jumps to $25 per CD

June 25, 2003

Since January 2000, Indiana University’s Center for Statistical and Mathematical Computing has offered SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) software to the university community for $5 per CD. Effective July 1, the cost will rise to $25 per CD, as part of IU’s new license agreement with SPSS, Inc.

According to the Center’s Web site, SPSS is “one of the most popular statistical packages that can perform highly complex data manipulation and analysis with simple instructions.” The software can read data in almost any format—numeric, alphanumeric, binary, dollar, date, or time. Versions 6 and higher can read files created using spreadsheet/database software.

Rising production cost fueled the price increase, according to John Samuel, Ph.D., director of the Center for Statistical and Mathematical Computing. “Faced with the unfortunate decision of either canceling the agreement or passing more cost along to users, we have chosen to do the latter,” Samuel said. “At the newer price, it is perhaps no longer an amazing arrangement, . . . but [$25] is still very modest when compared to the $1,996 academic list price of a single copy of the software.”

For more information on the software, contact the Center at (812) 855-8451 or IU Kokomo’s Office of Information Technologies at http://ko-cser-voyager.ads.iu.edu/technology.html.
