KOKOMO, Ind.—On May 25, the Kokomo Rotary Club presented its 2004 Vocational Achievement Award to Charlotte Miller, coordinator of Education and Student Resources for IU Kokomo’s Division of Education. Miller was recognized for her continued guidance and mentoring of undergraduate students, particularly as director of the campus’ Curriculum Lab. Called CuLab for short, the center makes print, Internet and other classroom resources available to IU Kokomo education students and area teachers. The award also cited Miller’s role as a founder of the Division of Education Exploring Teaching Post in 1996. Coordinated by the Boy Scouts of America’s Life Long Learning Division, Exploring posts let high school students investigate specific careers by matching them with professionals in those areas. The Exploring Teaching Post brings together the university’s education majors with high school students interested in becoming teachers. They meet monthly to discuss teaching as a career and to participate in a variety of events. This year, post members toured The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis and staffed a craft booth at the Learning for Life Outdoor Challenge, held May 5 at Oakbrook Valley Park. The Outdoor Challenge brought together more than 800 special needs students from Howard, Miami, Grant and Wabash counties for a day of sports and fun. Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology Ellen Sigler, Ph.D., has been faculty co-leader of the Exploring Teaching Post with Miller for the past two years. When she was in high school, Sigler took part in an Exploring post dealing with psychology. “My post had a great influence on my career decisions, and I wanted to share it with the students,” she said. The Exploring Teaching Post gives the participating university students “an opportunity to discuss why they are in the field and why they feel teaching is important,” Sigler said. Elementary education majors April Wells of Wabash, Melissa Guzman of Galveston and Kyle Parvin of Russiaville were student leaders in 2003–2004.
