Jen Riggs goes to Parliament
June 13, 2005 | ||||||
KOKOMO, Ind.—Follow the adventures of a Tipton college student's summer internship with the Canadian House of Parliament, currently featured on the Indiana University News Web site (www.indiana.edu/~interns). Jennifer Riggs, a communication arts major at IU Kokomo, has recorded her experience for the series “IU's Amazing Student Interns.”
Since mid-May, Riggs has worked in the Ottawa office of the Honorable Jim Karygiannis, representative for Scarborough, Ontario, in the Canadian House of Commons. Riggs has conducted research, written letters to constituents, met with other members of Parliament, and helped her team in other ways. Her diary entries and photos on the Web site document her work, her observations on Canadian politics, and her brushes with the powerful, including Canada's Prime Minister Paul Martin. “The entire process of government fascinates me,” Riggs said. “I love that this internship combines my areas of interest in history, communication, and English.” She believed the internship would be a good stepping-stone toward a career in publishing or political consulting. IU Kokomo Associate Professor of Communication Arts Donna McLean, Ph.D., helped arranged Riggs' internship through the IU Center for Global Change and its associate director Kenneth Steuer. “As Jennifer's advisor in communication arts, and as a Canadian citizen and legal American resident, I feel twinges of pride that Jennifer is exploring our country to the north,” McLean said. “While Canada and the United States share enormous cultural similarities, they also possess numerous differences. Given the trade between the two countries and America's political relationship with Canada, I think it is extremely important that Americans better understand and reflect on the shared interests of the two nations.” As IU Kokomo's overseas study advisor, McLean said she also hoped that more students take advantage of the programs that Indiana University and the Kokomo campus can offer, both within the Americas and in Europe and Asia.
