KOKOMO, Ind.—Middle school students are not supposed to be thinking about college, right? If it were up to the Twenty-first Century Scholars program, all seventh- and eighth-graders would be aware that they might be eligible to receive free tuition to an Indiana college or university. The Scholars program, operated through the State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana, offers eight semesters of free tuition to more than 80 Indiana universities, colleges, and trade schools. All income-eligible students in the seventh and eighth grades who make and keep a pledge through high school graduation can participate in the Scholars program. The Kokomo Regional Support Program at Indiana University Kokomo currently serves 2,000 student Scholars in grades 7–12 across a seven-county region. In its first 10 years, the Scholars program has enrolled more than 90,000 students statewide, with more than 27,000 Scholars receiving and using tuition funding. Students in grades 7 and 8 during the 2004–2005 academic year have until June 30 to enroll in the Twenty-first Century Scholars program. Applications are available to seventh and eighth graders only, and can be obtained by calling the Kokomo Regional Scholar Support Program office at IU Kokomo at (765) 455-9572 or (800) 213-0165. Students who meet income and resident eligibility requirements must fill out an application form. Financial information and the signature of a parent or guardian are also required. Students in foster care automatically qualify for the Scholars program during their seventh and eighth grade years.
Along with tuition, the Scholars program also provides parent activities, college visits, SAT prep workshops, financial aid workshops, and career information designed to encourage students to stay away from drug- and alcohol-related activities and pursue higher education.
