Stanley family continues scholarship tradition
June 22, 2006
KOKOMO, Ind.—At his home in Florida, former Kokomo resident Dick Stanley is accumulating a wall full of hometown reminders. They are photos of himself, along with his siblings and the many Indiana University Kokomo students they’ve helped through their family’s scholarship fund.
Recipients for the 2006–2007 academic year are Elaine Chumbley of Peru, Karie Lewis of Kokomo, and Tom Buffum of Logansport. Each has received a $500 Mildred Stanley Scholarship, named in memory of the Stanleys’ mother.
Up to four separate scholarships have been awarded annually since the scholarship was first awarded in 2000. Granted for academic achievement, the scholarships are renewable annually if the recipients maintain a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
This is the second year that Chumbley, a nursing major, received a Mildred Stanley Scholarship. Lewis qualified for the Stanley grant for a third consecutive year; she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in management and marketing.
Accepting his first Mildred Stanley Scholarship, Buffum is studying computer information systems.
Dick Stanley worked at Delco Electronics for 38 years, before retiring in 1990. He moved to Florida in 1996. He and other family members come to IU Kokomo annually to meet the coming year’s scholarship recipients and learn about the students’ career plans. “I think it’s neat that Dick did something like this [establish the scholarship fund],” said Dick’s sister Jean Mullins of Kokomo. “Everybody needs help once in a while.”
Mullins said she eagerly reads articles about IU Kokomo in local newspapers, hoping to catch word of the scholarship winners she’s met. “Dick reads it on the Internet,” she added. With pride, Mullins recalled one of the first Mildred Stanley Scholarship winners, Celia Carpenter of Elwood. Carpenter maintained eligibility for the scholarship for four consecutive years, before graduating in 2004 with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
