  Crash course in computer basics will get you up to speed

KOKOMO, Ind.—Don’t let computer technology scare you. IU Kokomo’s Division of Continuing Studies offers a four-day crash course called Condensed Computer Basics that can give you foundational skills needed to move from raw beginner to intermediate-level computer user. Classes run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, April 21–30. A one-hour lunch break is scheduled at noon. The class fee is $259.

Students must purchase a textbook; it is the same book used in previous Continuing Studies courses Computer Basics I, II and III.

E-mail Basics Learn the basics, such as setting up an e-mail account, composing and sending e-mail and sending attachments. Tuesday and Thursday, April 1 and 3, 5:30–7:30 p.m. Fee: $59

ccess® Basics Microsoft's Office® tool called Access® contains tremendous depth and structure to create databases. Learn Access® methodologies as you investigate relational database design and creation. Topics to be covered include primary keys, relational database structure, formats, linking databases, SQL and Object Linking and Embedding. Book required. Genealogy Get acquainted with the basics of genealogy research and how to organize the data you collect. Tuesdays, April 1–22, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $60

Calligraphy for Beginners If you have always wanted be able to do fine hand-lettering, this class is for you. Design elegant, impressive, personalized invitations, place cards and stationery for fun and profit. Mondays, April 7–28, 6–9 p.m. Fee: $89

Effective Time Management Set goals and achieve them by discovering how to schedule and prioritize tasks, manage interruptions and recognize obstacles to achieving goals on time. No book required. Tuesday, April 8, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $70

Non-Profit Board Development Get the board involved and keep them involved. This workshop will present responsibilities, recruitment, training and tasking of board members. A review of cases and discussion of participant situations will be included. Board members, staff and volunteers should attend together. Tuesday and Thursday, April 8 and 10, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $79

Microsoft Office® Basics Microsoft® has many user-friendly features that can help with presentations, letters, spreadsheets and more. Learn basics of Office programs Word®, Excel®, PowerPoint® and Access®. Book required. Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 8–17, 5:30–7:30 p.m. Fee: $99

Photoshop® Elements Enter the world of graphic design with Photoshop® Elements from Adobe®. Gain skills necessary to become a professional graphic artist: color management, layers, filters, masking, optimizing for Web performance and more. No book required. Managing for Success Pick up practical tips on managing time effectively, increasing meeting productivity, crystallizing and focusing goals, developing leadership skills and so much more. No book required. Tuesday, April 15, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $70

FrontPage® Basics Many of the concepts taught in HTML I and HTML II can be performed in a quicker fashion by using FrontPage®. HTML and FrontPage® Basics combine to give the student a solid background for FrontPage®. Features of FrontPage® such as themes, style sheets and some of the Java functions will be covered in a hands-on format. Learn how to create a FrontPage® Web and easily upload a site to any Web-hosting service. Animations with Flash® This course introduces the world of vector art and animation with Macromedia’s Flash®. Make your own cartoons, dynamic art and professional Web graphics. Customer Service This seminar deals with the art of exceptional customer service. It has broad applications, but is best suited for frontline employees (or volunteers) in travel, hospitality and recreation fields.
