SIFE team working toward third regional win

March 19, 2003

KOKOMO, Ind.—Aiming at a third consecutive regional win for IU Kokomo, the campus’ Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) chapter will compete April 10 and 11 in St. Louis at the regional SIFE competition. Last year, the local chapter advanced from the regional to the national SIFE competition and placed as first runner-up in its league.

The campus community is invited to attend a formal dress rehearsal of the 2003 chapter’s competition presentation Tuesday, April 8, at 5 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium.

Audience response will help the students hone their speaking and presentation skills, said faculty sponsor Kathy Parkison, Ph.D. “The SIFE team has done a lot of neat projects, and the annual reports and presentation are looking pretty good. Now we need to polish, refine, practice gestures, pacing, etc.”

Founded by Wal-Mart creator Sam Walton, SIFE encourages college business students to develop leadership, communication, and team-building skills through community outreach projects that promote free enterprise. In competition, student presenters outline their outreach projects to a judges panel of top business leaders.

IU Kokomo offers SIFE both as a School of Business course and a student activity. Twenty students participate in this year’s class, taught by Parkison and co-sponsor Joan Hoch, undergraduate advisor in the School of Business. An additional 10 students are involved on an extracurricular basis.

Most current members are new to the chapter this year, and were not part of 2002 team, Parkison and Hoch noted. However, they said, the 2003 SIFE team has completed 35 different outreach projects, and it has been the variety and number of projects undertaken by past IU Kokomo SIFE teams that impressed judges in previous competitions. This year’s SIFE students have taught economics basics to several area elementary classes, donated educational resources for Eastern European teachers, and conducted a six-county survey on technology and Internet use by businesses, on behalf of Workforce Development Strategies, Inc.
