With a 9–1 season, the IU Kokomo Cougars men’s basketball team became C Division champions of the Kokomo City Parks and Recreation Industrial League on February 1. The team took its division title in the city tournament February 22. Team members include Jake Johnson of Atlanta, Vincente Lorenz of Russiaville, Kaleb Hollingsworth of Sharpsville, and Kokomo residents Jacob Barnes, John Clendenning, Jacob Riley, Darrin Smith, and Darrian Story. IU Kokomo teams have won several previous league titles, and its players are “highly respected in the city,” according to Coach Don G. Smith. The vice president of Central Bank in Kokomo, Smith has coached the campus team in the park league for 12 years. Mike Karickhoff is assistant coach. “Our philosophy is to have fun, but our players want to be competitive,” said Smith. Most current team members are recent high school graduates, who played for the likes of Kokomo, Hamilton Heights, and Western high schools, the coach said. “They want to test their skills against established players.” An adjunct faculty member, Smith teaches courses on banking for the IU Kokomo School of Business and the Division of Continuing Studies.
