KOKOMO, Ind.—Seven Indiana University Kokomo students will spend spring break in Porto Alegre, Brazil, as part of an overseas study program sponsored by the Division of Labor Studies. Students from both the IU Kokomo and IU Northwest campuses will participate in the 10-day educational exchange hosted by the Metalworkers Federation of Brazil. They will visit factories and steel plants as well as meet with union workers and leaders. Students will study the Brazilian labor movement, its organizational history and structure, and the history of the Workers Party. The seven IU Kokomo students heading to Brazil are all labor studies majors. They include Sue Ann Henson of Bringhurst, Kim Ford of Tipton, Susan Perry of Galveston, and Kokomo residents Todd Jordan, Amber Jordan, Wayne Conwell, and Tamara Biddler. Conwell and both Jordans work for Delphi Electronics and Safety; the other students are all employees of Daimler Chrysler. Cheryl Graham, an alumna of the IU Kokomo Division of Labor Studies, will also join the trip. She works for the Howard County United Way and is Director of Community Relations of the Howard-Tipton County Central Labor Council. Assistant Professor of Labor Studies William Mello, from IU Kokomo, and IU Northwest Professor of Labor Studies Ruth Needleman, Ph.D., will lead the trip. Both visited Brazil this past summer as special guests of the Brazilian Federation of Labor at the World Forum on Education.
