Kofas publishes book and journal article

March 3, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.---Indiana University Kokomo Professor of History Jon Kofas, Ph.D., wrote two recently published works covering aspects of international politics following World War II.

The German journal MITTELWEG 36 printed Kofas' article "Die Truman-Dokrin und der griechische Burgerkrieg 1946-1949" ("The Truman Doctrine and the Greek Civil War 1946-1949").

"The journal has wide distribution throughout Europe among academics, college students, politicians, and journalists," Kofas said. " It covers broad issues, and my article was chosen because it traces the continuity of U.S. foreign policy patterns from [U.S. presidents Harry] Truman to [George W.] Bush."

Ashgate Publishing (Aldershot, UK, and Burlington, Vt.) published Kofas' book Independence from America: Global Integration and Inequality. In a promotional piece, the publisher described Kofas' work as "a comprehensive and thought-provoking study of 'global integration' after the Second World War . . . [that would be] of particular interest to those studying and researching in the fields of international political economy, foreign policy, development politics and political theory."

Reviewer John Womack of Harvard University wrote: "Kofas is a phenomenal historian of twentieth century imperialism. . . . He develops a highly interesting and compelling argument about the post-1945 differences between U.S. and West European strategies for managing 'underdeveloped' countries. . . . He finds . . . that the U.S. model has aggravated inequality, [and] deepened clients' poverty, whereas the E.U. (European Union) model has reduced inequality between its 'center' and 'periphery,' and improved its adopted countries' present welfare and prospects for the future."

Womack concluded that he "seconds" Kofas' recommendation of the EU model of "interdependence for development in the twenty-first century."
