Free showing of 'Osama' March 22 at IU Kokomo
March 10, 2005 | |||||
KOKOMO, Ind.—“Osama,” a film inspired by a true story of life in Afghanistan, will be shown at Indiana University Kokomo on Tuesday, March 22. The 7 p.m. showing in Kresge Auditorium is free and open to the public. “Osama” is rated PG-13 and has English subtitles. Viewers are welcome to stay for a discussion of the film's themes immediately following the movie.
“Osama” was the first Afghan film made after the end of Afghanistan's Taliban regime in 2003. Previously, all filming had been banned. “Osama” depicts a 12-year-old Afghan girl and her widowed mother, who lose their jobs when the Taliban closes the hospital where they work. Their troubles multiply when the Taliban decrees that women may not appear in public without male escorts. The mother disguises her daughter as a boy named Osama, so the girl can find work. The child embarks on a terrifying and confusing journey hiding from the Taliban while trying to help her family. All of the actors in the film were amateurs and residents of the city of Kabul, including young Marina Golbahari, who played the title role. “Osama” was nominated and won awards at eight international film festivals, including three awards at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival and the 2004 USA Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language. As a complement to the film, IU Kokomo will host a “brown bag” lunch and discussion regarding “Women in the Muslim World” on Thursday, March 23. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunches and join in this free roundtable conversation from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. in the Kelley Student Center, Room 130B. The film presentation and the related discussions are part of American Democracy Project (ADP) activities at IU Kokomo. ADP is a national, multi-campus initiative that seeks to offer undergraduates an intellectual and experiential understanding of citizen education. ADP activities will take place on campus through spring 2006. Visit www.iuk.edu/adp to see a full schedule of activities for spring 2005. Visitors without an IU vehicle pass may park free, for the movie and the brown bag lunch only, on the lower level of the campus parking garage.
