Hamilton to share thoughts on 9/11

March 17, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.---Former Indiana Ninth District Congressman Lee Hamilton will discuss the findings of the 9/11 Commission in a public address at Indiana University Kokomo on Wednesday, April 6. Scheduled at 7:30 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium, the talk is part of ongoing American Democracy Project activities at the campus; admission is free. Hamilton will be available to meet with the public following his lecture from 8:30--9:30 p.m.

The bipartisan National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States---more commonly known as the 9/11 Commission---met from March 2003 through August 2004, with Hamilton as its vice chairman. Congress chartered the 10-member commission and a staff of 80 to prepare a complete account of the circumstances surrounding the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, including preparedness for and immediate response to the attacks.

At IU Kokomo, Hamilton will outline the commission's recommendations for guarding the nation against future attacks. Hamilton addressed the same topic last October at IU Bloomington. John R. Hughey, reporting for the October 22, 2004, issue of IU Home Pages, wrote that Hamilton spoke of "Four Is" necessary for fighting terrorism in the United States:

¥ Identification---"Who is the enemy?"

¥ Intelligence---"We underestimated the threat before; we must not do it again."

¥ Integration---"We need one national center for collecting foreign and domestic intelligence."

¥ International---"If we fail to have international consensus, we will not be safe."

Hughey wrote that Hamilton "sees the fight against terrorism as a 'clash of civilizations,' and that the need for diplomacy is greater than ever before. 'Millions of Muslims grow up without hope,' said Hamilton. 'They're taught the United States is the source of their ills. We cannot wage war (against terrorism) if we don't help. . . . They've got to know we are on their side.' "

Hamilton served for 34 years in Congress representing Indiana's Ninth District. In 1999, he became director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and the Center on Congress, housed at the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Bloomington.
