KOKOMO, Ind.—Circles are everywhere in David Correa's painting. Faces, animals—all take perfectly rounded shapes. “The circle and mathematics are the basis of everything; that is why they are always part of my compositions,” the Mexican painter told an interviewer for ArteandarteS Magazine in 2000. “Circles can supply countless possibilities.” Correa's work comes to the Indiana University Kokomo Art Gallery April 3–May 8, as a traveling show hosted by the Mexican Cultural Institute in San Antonio, Texas. This marks the third year that the Gallery has featured a Hispanic artist in its major spring exhibition. “The paintings of Lucia Maya in 2003 and the sculptures and rituals of Elizabeth Ross in 2004 introduced our students to new historical viewpoints of how art develops,” said Gallery Director Minda Douglas. “Students in our Spanish language classes deepened their understanding of the cultural basis of that language. I know that David Correa's colorful works will inspire additional learning.” In a 2001 article, LuxeandClass Magazine suggested that Correa's work draws inspiration from such artists as Van Gogh, Tamayo, and Picasso. His “simple” drawings seem to have been created “with the only purpose to please and rejoice in people's feelings,” the article stated. “The figures he designs are just an excuse to cover [them] with the deep and intense color.” Born in Mexico City in 1965 to a poor barrio family, Correa has participated in more than 180 exhibits in such countries as the United States, Spain, Italy, Belize, and Argentina. In 2000, he won the Italia per l'Arte prize in the Prima Edizione della Vetrina Internazionale degli Artisti Latino Americani. In March 2003, he was invited to Japan to exhibit and present a workshop in the Hamada Children's Museum of Art. There, he was acknowledged as an authentic sensei, the Japanese title for a respected, well-rounded teacher. Admission to all IU Kokomo Art Gallery exhibits and activities is free. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.–4 p.m., Monday–Thursday; Wednesdays, until 8 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays, noon–4 p.m. For more information, call (765) 455-9523 or visit www.iuk.edu/artgallery.
