Students perform in mystery theatre benefit

March 8, 2007

KOKOMO, Ind.—A pun-filled, fun-filled evening for a good cause is planned Friday, March 16, when Indiana University Kokomo students, directed by Susan Sciame-Giesecke, Ph.D., perform Deader than a Door Nail.

Proceeds of the mystery dinner theatre will benefit Family Service Association (FSA) of Howard County’s programs addressing domestic violence. The event starts at 6 p.m. at Morning Star Church, 2900 E. Markland Ave., Kokomo.

While dining, the audience can play detective, trying to uncover which of the play’s campy characters committed murder. Could it be book critic Page Turner (played by Ashley Campbell), Librarian Lotta Books (Melody Pike), or publisher Del Doubleday (Chris Dame)? Who-done-it author Agatha Mystry (Jessica Criswell) will unmask the villain by dessert time and present an award to the top audience sleuth.

Other cast members include Noah Hoover, Lisa Brinker, Elisabeth Bratcher, Kevin Boucher, Stephanie York, Caleb Harvey, and Christopher Brozo.

“I really want to thank these IU Kokomo students for giving up time during their spring break to participate in this production,” said Sciame-Giesecke. Dean of IU Kokomo’s School of Arts and Sciences, Sciame-Giesecke serves on the Family Services Association board of directors. Cathy Hightower, director of Alumni Relations and Public Affairs, also serves on the FSA board.

Sheila Hayworth, owner of “Come and Get It,” will cater the dinner.

Angel Walk/Take Back the Night

Some 20 campus and community teams have already formed for the 2007 Angel Walk/Take Back the Night planned April 24 at IU Kokomo. For the second year, students, faculty, and staff, along with other volunteers, will collect sponsorship donations and march in the one-mile Angel Walk. Proceeds benefit FSA’s domestic violence programs.

Preceding and following the walk, displays in Alumni Hall will showcase student research and class projects from the spring semester, focused on aspects of domestic and dating violence.

Take Back the Night is a global, largely university-based effort to bring critical attention to violence against women. IU Kokomo’s American Democracy Project is sponsoring the Take Back the Night rally. For more information, contact Kathryn Widman at (765) 455-9491.
