KOKOMO, Ind.—Jackson Morrow Park will be the new site of Camp Eeze-the-Wheeze and KIDDS (Kids with Insulin Dependant Diabetes) Kamp. The annual day camps are designed to help youngsters cope with asthma and diabetes, respectively. Scheduled from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. on June 9–13, the camps are open to children ages 6–13. Camp participants take part in arts, crafts and sports, as well as educational programs that cover medication, diet, and exercise appropriate to the children’s conditions. Both camps offer tips on coping emotionally with a chronic condition, and children with diabetes will learn about blood testing. Area physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists provide medical supervision. IU Kokomo Associate Professor of Nursing Lynda Narwold, along with other School of Nursing faculty and students, coordinate the camps. “It’s a lot of fun, and the kids learn how to live with and manage their diabetes and asthma,” Narwold said. The per-camper fee is $20, although financial assistance is available for interested campers, according to Narwold. “We understand the financial toll of having a child with diabetes or asthma,” she said. Area businesses and individuals donate much of the camps’ expenses. This year’s co-sponsors for both camps include St. Joseph Hospital and Health Center; Howard Community Hospital; and Allen and Hansburys, Division of Glaxo, Inc. Additional sponsors for Camp Eeze-the-Wheeze are the American Lung Association and YMCA Camp Tycony. Additional sponsors for KIDDS Kamp are Bayer Corporation and Astra Zeneca. Narwold expressed special thanks to the Kokomo Parks and Recreation Department for its help in providing the camps’ site at Jackson Morrow Park. Parks Department Superintendent Dan Smith and Recreation Programmer Jeremy Fewell were very helpful,” she said.
