KOKOMO, Ind.—Students from seven north central Indiana high schools, as well as home-schooled students, have been invited to participate in the Eighth Annual High School Exhibition at the Indiana University Kokomo Art Gallery. High schools invited to submit art for the May 18–June 22 show include Taylor, Western, Northwestern, Eastern, Kokomo Center, Peru, and Lawrence North.

“This is the first time the Gallery has invited area home-schooled youth to participate in the annual show, and we are very excited about the addition,” said Gallery Director Minda Douglas. Under the theme “Once Upon a Time . . .,” the featured artwork will incorporate elements of fantasy, fairy tales, and dreams.

Home-schooled ninth graders Holly Williams and Jason Christenson—the children of Kokomo couples David and Dione Williams and John and Rebecca Christenson, respectively—will present artwork that won awards in the recent Kokomo Art Off the Square exhibit. Holly’s “Where the Deer and the Antelope Play” is an example scherenschnitte, or German paper cutting. She cut mirror image outlines of animals, plants and other shapes into a single piece of paper; the result looks like fine lace mounted on a black background. An admirer of nature artist John James Audubon, Holly said her love of animals frequently inspires her art. In the scherenschnitte, she said she was “trying to capture the mood of solitude in the forests and mountains.” She also enjoys drawing, making brayer (rolled ink) prints and creating collages and three-dimensional work.

Jason Christenson’s colored pencil drawing “AscendingWaterfall” shows a red, green and blue canal that seems to bend and twist back on itself in an endless flow of water. Jason said the work was an attempt to re-create the “imaginative, unusual and thought-provoking” style of Dutch graphic artist M. C. Escher. Working in the early to mid-twentieth century, Escher was most recognized for his images of impossible buildings and repeated geometric patterns that appear to change with the viewer’s perspective.

“This isn’t the type of art I usually create,” Jason said. “I tend to make realistic pictures, of animals and people in charcoal, colored pencil or markers using the pointillism technique.”

For several years, both Jason and Holly have entered artwork in the annual Association of Christian Schools International State Art Festival. When she was in seventh grade, Holly was awarded a Best of Show, and her piece was sent on to the association’s Midwest art exhibit.

The Indiana University Art Gallery is located in the Kelley Student Center on the IU Kokomo campus. Admission to all Gallery exhibits and events is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays, noon–4 p.m.
