KOKOMO, Ind.—Learn skills needed for a career in human resources management through a new certificate program offered by the Indiana University Kokomo Division of Continuing Studies. Students pursuing a Human Resources certificate must take six required courses, plus one elective in business or computer technology.
Required courses kick off in June with Introduction to Human Resources: Generalist and Specialist. This course reviews human resources policies and procedures, the Family Medical Leave Act, customer service and communication with upper management. The class meets Thursdays, June 5–26, from 6–8 p.m. The course fee is $99.
Continuing Studies offers another popular professional course, the comprehensive Personal Trainer certificate program, in June and July. The eight-week course covers client screening, goal setting, scientific exercise principles, nutritional strategies, marketing of services and many other topics important to fitness professionals. Offered on Tuesdays, June 3–July 29, from 6–8 p.m., the program costs $450.

Computer Basics I Get to know the main parts of a computer and what they do, simple computer lingo and what’s on the keyboard. This hands-on class provides the foundation you need to move to the other computer classes. Pilates Matwork Achieve a balance between strength and flexibility using Pilates-based matwork. Movements will focus on the core muscles of the abdomen and back. It is recommended that students do not consume food 1–2 hours before class. Mondays, June 2–July 14 (no class on June 30), 6–7 p.m. Fee: $98
Red Hat® Linux Introduction Using Linux is similar to using MS-DOS. The course covers step-by-step Linux command instructions, files, directories, job control, vi, shell scripts and system administration. A+ Certification This 40-hour course covers software/hardware installations, system optimization, PC troubleshooting and customer service issues. Self-defense for Women Did you know that 90 percent of all persons involved in threatening street and rape situations end up on the ground? This course provides four hours of instruction in practical self-defense for threatening street situations and rape prevention, with emphasis on ground/grappling techniques. Managing the Unmanageable Build bridges to better communication by learning how to separate people from issues and develop conflict resolution skills. Tuesday, June 10, 6–8 p.m. Fee: $70
