  Winners in state math contest announced

May 2, 2003

 
KOKOMO, Ind.—Seven area participants in the April 26 Indiana State High School Math Contest received Scholar Awards, indicating that they scored 75 percent or higher. Sponsored by the Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the contest drew approximately 2,000 participants at 15 Indiana sites, including the IU Kokomo campus.

Local winners included:
Prealgebra
Scholar Awards: Matt Koscica, Western Middle School, and Kevin Chaung, Eric Jiang and Omid Zolail-Meybodi, all of Central Middle School. Chaung, Kosica and Zolail-Meybodi won the local site awards by earning the top three scores in the category.

Algebra I
Scholar Awards: Corey Anderson, Central Middle School, and Olga Fields, Taylor High School. Local site awards went to Anderson, Fields and Anna Hurlock, Western Middle School.

Geometry
Scholar Award: Bo Ling, Kokomo High School. Ling also won a local site award, along with Mike Hill and Zach Ruby, both of Kokomo High School.

Algebra II
Local site awards went to Kokomo High School students Robert Kadlec, Stephen VandeLune and Brendan Vyain.

Comprehensive
Local site awards went to Kokomo High School students Ian Carter and Brad Rogers, as well as home-schooled student Angela Smiley.

Robin G. Symonds coordinated the local contest. IU Kokomo faculty who proctored the tests and provided additional assistance included Mary Hansen, Marie Kunkle, Barbara Sehr, Carl Widland, Robert Roales, Marcia Gillette and John Hughey.
