KOKOMO, Ind.—Visit Mayan ruins and the Mexican resort city of Cozumel while earning college credit, by enrolling in the IU Kokomo course, “Recent Hispanic Literature.” Starting May 14, the four-week class meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4–6:45 p.m. on the IU Kokomo campus. It culminates with a trip to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, June 7–11. Instructor Karla Stouse, lecturer in English, said students will read the works of contemporary writers such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Laura Esquivel and Isabel Allende, focusing on magical realism, literature and culture. “We’ll look at the role of contemporary women in a traditionally machismo society,” she added. “While in Playa del Carmen, students will research connections between the literature and what they see as we venture to Mayan ruins, visit the eco-cultural park Xcaret, and talk with locals.” Participants will also journey to Cozumel for a day to see how tourism affects the culture. Students can earn credit toward either a bachelor’s degree or a graduate degree in the course, listed as L381/B657 in the Summer I catalog. Summer registration will re-open on May 8. “If individuals are interested in taking the trip but not the class, that is also a possibility,” Stouse said. “Students obviously need to register as soon as possible so that we can process the necessary paperwork for IU Bloomington.”
