African American alumni display hosted by IU Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind.A traveling photo exhibit, chronicling the history of African Americans at Indiana University, will be on display through June 3 in Alumni Hall of the Kelley Student Center, IU Kokomo. Free and open to the public, the exhibit is titled The Black Experience at Indiana University: Realizing the Dream 18162002. Its photos and text highlight IU alumni, faculty and staff who have distinguished themselves both within the university and worldwide. Featured alumni include: National Public Radio commentator Tavis Smiley, who is originally from Kokomo The first black basketball player in the Big Ten, later All-American Bill Garrett Appellate court judge Juanita Kidd Stout, the first black woman elected to a U.S. bench U.S. Secretary of Education Roderick Paige Joint sponsors of the exhibit include the IU and IU Kokomo alumni associations, the Kokomo chapter of Indiana Black Expo, the IU Office of Student Development and Diversity and the North Central chapter of the Neal-Marshal Alumni Club. Named for the first male and female African American graduates of Indiana University, Neal-Marshal is open to all African American members of the IU Alumni Association.
