IU Kokomo Labor Studies helps organize Union School for Women

May 30, 2003

KOKOMO, Ind.—The 2003 Indiana School of Union Women, presented by the Indiana University Division of Labor Studies, will meet May 29–31 at the Ramada Inn and Conference Center in Lebanon, Ind. Laurie Graham, Cathy Shelton and Lynn Gosser of the IU Kokomo Division of Labor Studies are coordinating the conference. Co-sponsors are the Indiana State AFL-CIO, United Auto Workers Region 3, and the Indiana Coalition of Labor Union Women.

Under the theme “Building Union Solidarity,” the 2003 School of Union Women will cover traditional union concerns, such as bargaining, leadership, and grievance handling, as well as two new classes for 2003: “Cultural Tools for Building Solidarity” and “Women in the Trades.” In the former, Graham said, participants will present a play about the nation’s first sit-down strike, demonstrating how to use the arts to spread union messages.

“Women in Trades” looks at female workers handling skilled trade jobs not traditionally held by women, such as carpenters, electricians and operators of highway construction machinery. Graham indicated that a number of area union women work in these trades.

Graham has helped organize the union school for 10 years. She anticipates attendance from throughout the state, including members of all of the Kokomo area United Auto Workers locals, and representatives of the carpenters and steelworkers locals, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees.
