Wittmeyer wins first McGowan Scholarship at IU Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind.—Erin Wittmeyer of Plymouth has received a $15,098 scholarship toward her Master of Business Administration degree at Indiana University Kokomo. Wittmeyer was named the first campus recipient of a McGowan Scholar Award May 7, during the School of Business’ annual scholarship luncheon. She is employed by the campus as assistant director of Admissions. The McGowan Charitable Fund, established by MCI Communications founder William G. McGowan, presents its McGowan Scholar Awards annually to schools of business accredited by the International Association for Management Education (AACSB)—as the IU Kokomo school is—or the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACSBSP). “It is indeed an honor to be included among the schools that received McGowan Scholar awards,” said School of Business Dean Niranjan Pati, Ph.D. “The scholarship is intended to attract bright students to apply to our program.” In other awards presented at the luncheon, Heath Martin of Noblesville, a finance and economics major, was recognized as the Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Business. Master of Business Administration candidate David Brown of Westfield received the Outstanding Graduate Student award.

Scholarship students in the Master of Business Administration program included:Brad Stansbury Memorial Scholarship: Eric Schneider, Carmel Professor of Accounting Marilyn Kintzele, Ph.D., presented the Indiana CPA Society Award to Norman Gould III, Noblesville. Sam M. Walton Fellows Kathy Parkison, Ph.D.. and Joan Hoch presented service awards to members of the IU Kokomo Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) chapter, recognizing more than 100 hours of community service in the past academic years. Recipients were Katryna Bandy, Kokomo, pre-business; Leslie Hulce, Greentown, pre-business; Josh Higdon, Converse, management and human resources; Brandi Reagle, Peru, marketing and distribution; and Brian van Camp, Bunker Hill, pre-business. The SIFE chapter earned its fourth consecutive regional title in SIFE U.S. collegiate competition in April. The chapter will advance to the national competition May 23–25 in Kansas City, Mo. Mayor of Kokomo Matt McKillip addressed the awards luncheon audience, speaking on the pursuit of excellence. A member of the School of Business Advisory Board, McKillip said those who wish to excel must have a positive attitude, a few achievable goals, and perseverance in meeting those goals despite obstacles. He also advised the students to have mentors—“someone who can teach you new and better ways to do things”—and to be willing to “take risks and make mistakes.”
