KOKOMO, Ind.—Kids will be kids. They like the outdoors, playing sports and learning new things in a fun atmosphere. And that’s what Camp Eeze-the-Wheeze and KIDDS (Kids with Insulin Dependant Diabetes) Kamp try to provide each year, for youngsters learning to live with and manage asthma and diabetes, respectively. IU Kokomo School of Nursing faculty and students coordinate the camps, which will run simultaneously Monday–Friday, June 7–11, at Jackson Morrow Park, 4200 S. Park Road, Kokomo. From 9 a.m.–3 p.m. each day, campers ages 6–13 can take part in arts, crafts and sports. Youngsters also attend educational programs that cover medication, diet and exercise appropriate to the children’s conditions. Both camps offer tips on coping emotionally with a chronic condition, and children with diabetes will learn about blood testing. Area physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and pharmacists provide medical supervision. The per-camper fee is $20. Financial assistance is available for interested campers, according to Lynda Narwold, associate professor of nursing and director of the camps. Area businesses and individuals donate much of the camps’ expenses. This year’s co-sponsors for both camps include Kokomo Parks and Recreation Department; St. Joseph Hospital and Health Center; Howard Regional Health System; and Allen and Hansburys, Division of Glaxo, Inc. The Bayer Corporation is an additional sponsor for KIDDS Kamp. To request a registration form for KIDDS Kamp or Camp Eeze-the-Wheeze or to learn more, contact Narwold at (765) 455-9308.
