Widman, Guzman win Outstanding Student Leader Awards

May 21, 2004

KOKOMO, Ind.—Melissa Guzman of Galveston and Kathryn Widman of Rochester have received IU Kokomo’s 2003–2004 Outstanding Student Leader Awards. Vice Chancellor for Student Services Jack Tharp presented the awards May 10 during the campus’ Honor’s Day ceremonies.

The Outstanding Student Leader Award winners are selected on the criteria of academic performance, loyalty to the university and enthusiasm in leadership positions. Tharp said Guzman and Widman are “both successful, hard-working, dedicated women,” who have maintained high academic records and active involvement in campus life.

Guzman is “a great role-model, always leading by example,” Tharp said. “She has made a significant impact on this campus and has been inspirational to many. She has a great work-ethic, is friendly and professional, goes out of her way to make other students feel welcome, and is always willing to volunteer where needed.”

A full-time, non-traditional aged student in the Division of Education, Guzman has been a student worker in the Office of Student Activities, a senator for the Student Government Association, a member of the Student Union Board, coordinator for the Student Ambassadors, an officer in the Education Student Advisory Committee, co-chair of the Life-long Learning Partnership and vice president of Pi Lambda Theta. Guzman chairs the Student Alumni Association and serves as student representative on the IU Kokomo Alumni Association board. Guzman belongs to several national honor societies on campus and has worked on various university committees.

She will student teach in the fall 2004 semester and graduate in December with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.

On May 11, Kathryn Widman received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts from IU Kokomo. She has been accepted into graduate school at Purdue University, where she will major in college student affairs.

Widman performed in several plays for IU Kokomo’s University Theatre. She served as a leader for new student orientation, and assisted with campus visit days for prospective students and with projects in the Office of Student Activities.

For the past two years, Widman wrote and took photos for The Correspondent, the campus student newspaper. In fall 2003, she became managing editor of the newspaper. “During her tenure as editor, Widman took The Correspondent to the next level,” Tharp said. “As the editor, she was involved in every aspect of the newspaper, including managing a staff of student volunteers, a budget and an office. She was not afraid to roll up her sleeves and do what needed to be done, whether it be interviewing, writing, proofreading or dealing with printing problems. She even personally distributed the latest editions, hauling them across campus in a red wagon.”

In her community, Widman has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, and, for the last four years has served on a Relay for Life team, raising money for cancer research. In 2003, she was team captain, leading her team to raise a record amount of donations.

“She has done all of this while going to class, working a part-time job at a hardware store over an hour away in Rochester, where she lives, and maintaining a high G.P.A.,” Tharp said.
