KOKOMO, Ind.—The Wal-Mart Foundation has contributed $500 to the IU Kokomo science equipment endowment fund, on behalf of Wal-Mart Store No. 1962 in Kokomo. Jill Jeffries, assistant manager for the local store, presented the gift to Vice Chancellor for External Relations Nancy Dailey on April 26. The endowment is part of a total $935,000 project, which will purchase equipment to meet the current needs of science courses at IU Kokomo and establish an endowment for maintaining and replacing equipment in perpetuity. As of May 10, donors had pledged a total $224,239.78 to the endowment fund. A Kresge Science Initiative challenge grant will provide an initial $117,000 for equipment in July. Kresge will contribute an additional $117,000 in early 2005 if private gifts for the remainder of the endowment are secured by December 2004. “Wal-Mart made this gift in honor of Earth Day 2004. Wal-Mart is particularly interested in the campus’ emphasis on science and its related implications for a better environment,” said Dailey. “By keeping IU Kokomo’s science equipment up-to-date, the equipment endowment will certainly encourage student and faculty research, such as Dr. Christian Chauret’s work to assure clean drinking water and Dr. Michael Finkler’s research on environmental hazards to Midwestern amphibians and reptiles.” Students have assisted Chauret and Finkler in their research, both as independent projects and through IU’s Undergraduate Research Summer Institute grant program.
