KOKOMO, Ind.—The IU Kokomo Howard Community Band will present a free concert and ice cream social Wednesday, May 4, on the campus. “We're hoping the weather will be good, so we can hold the concert on the earth stage at 6 p.m.,” said coordinator Cindy Ison. “The audience should bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. “If rain threatens, we'll delay the concert until 7 p.m. and hold it in Kresge Auditorium.” Rain or shine, the concert promises a mixture of interesting music. With driving percussion and woodwinds, “Northwest Rising” by Robert Sheldon will convey the thrill of a hot-air balloon ride. “Star-Spangled Spectacular” will offer familiar tunes by George M. Cohan. The program will also include “Flight of Valor,” “Tunetown Review,” a medley of Jimmy Buffett's “Margaritaville” sounds, the “Second Suite in F for Military Band” by Gustav Holst, and the “Han Solo and Princess Leia” themes from “Star Wars.” The IU Kokomo Singers will join the band for a special musical salute to military veterans in attendance. Ranging from teenagers through adults, this year's 40 band performers come from both the campus and community, and include 13 IU Kokomo students. Kokomo High School (KHS) band director Eric Thornbury conducts the Community Band, assisted by Ison, who is a lecturer in music at IU Kokomo. Weekday guests to campus who do not have an IU Kokomo parking pass are asked to park in the lower level of the parking garage, located on the south end of campus. Parking is free for this event only.
