Conference set for Twenty-first Century Scholars' parents

May 5, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—If you are the parent of a Twenty-first Century Scholar, you can help your child in grades 7–11 succeed by learning the right questions to ask school administrators during a free Regional Parent Conference, Saturday, May 21, at IU Kokomo. Running from 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m., the workshop will also cover planning for students' future college expenses and avoiding common problems that pop up during the first year of college.

The day is sponsored by the Kokomo Regional Support Staff of the Twenty-first Century Scholars Program, based on the IU Kokomo campus. Twenty-first Century Scholars is a state- and federally-funded program that offers up to four years of college tuition awards to income eligible students, if they enroll as seventh or eighth graders, follow a pledge (which includes codes of good conduct), and successfully complete high school.

At the May 21 conference, parents can learn about the National Center for College Costs' free program that helps families maximize financial resources to meet college costs and to increase their student's eligibility for financial aid. The session “College Choice and Admissions” can be especially useful to first-generation college students and their families. It will include an exercise in which parents examine college admission files to discover what colleges and universities are looking for in prospective students. Other tips will assist in avoiding mistakes on college or employment applications and discussing how to choose a college that suits the individual student.

An “Ask the Experts” panel discussion will feature Kokomo Center Township Schools Instructional Systems Coordinator Jamie Ramos, social worker and IU Kokomo adjunct instructor in social science Gail Beaton, and Captain Gary McKay of the Kokomo Police Department.

Casual dress is suggested; lunch will be included. Scholar parents interested in attending should call (765) 455-9514 or toll free (800) 213-0165 by May 13.
