KOKOMO, Ind.—For a decade, the Indiana University Kokomo Art Gallery has devoted a yearly exhibit to works created by students in area high school art classes. The 10th Annual High School Exhibition, titled Best of the Seniors, will be on display May 22–June 12. The exhibition marks the first such opportunity for student artists of Frankfort and Wabash high schools. It is the third year that art by home-schooled secondary students will be featured. Other high schools invited to submit student works include Eastern, Kokomo, Kokomo Christian, Logansport, Maconaquah, Marion, Northwestern, Peru, Taylor, and Western. As he did in 2004, Dr. John Ladd of Ladd Dental Group, Kokomo, has donated $2,000 to the Gallery for prize money for the High School Exhibitions, and to pay jurors who will select the prize-winning art. “As active participants in community life, the staff of Ladd Dental Group feels it is important to support and foster the creative talents of our youth,” said Gallery Director Minda Douglas. “Their support has made a huge impact on the quality of the exhibition. The prize money brings another level of professionalism to the show.” The jurors for 2005 are artists Melissa Parrot from Indianapolis and Jerry Costello from Kokomo. Costello also serves on the IU Kokomo Art Gallery Advisory Board. Prizes will be announced at the opening reception from 2–4 p.m. on Sunday, May 22. “Lending support to local creative youth is an important part of our mission here at the Gallery,” Douglas said. “The High School Exhibition is a great way to introduce the greater community to the Gallery and campus, and vice versa.” All exhibitions and programs of the IU Kokomo Art Gallery are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Wednesdays, until 8 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays, noon–4 p.m. For more information on this or other exhibits, visit www.iuk.edu/artgallery or call (765) 455-9523.
