Manly Scholarship endowment receives $100,000 gift

May 12, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—A gift of $100,000 from the estate of former Kokomo business executive William D. Manly has significantly bolstered an endowed scholarship fund for Indiana University Kokomo students. In 1985, Manly established an endowed scholarship in honor of his wife, Jane Wilden Manly, who received a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies at the Kokomo campus. The recent gift, made through the IU Foundation, more than doubles the original value of the Manly Scholarship endowment.

After Mr. Manly's retirement in 1986, the couple moved to Mrs. Manly's home state of Tennessee. She died there in 1999; Mr. Manly continued to live there until he died in March 2003. The couple had four children.

“We are extremely grateful that Jane and William Manly maintained and demonstrated their loyalty to the school and community where Jane received her bachelor's degree,” said IU Kokomo Chancellor Ruth Person. “Mrs. Manly was 61 years old when she received her bachelor's degree in 1978. By her wishes, Jane Wilden Manly Scholarships have supported the educational dreams of students at IU Kokomo for 20 years now. Many recipients, like Mrs. Manly, have been married women with children. This gift promises more opportunities for many more students.”

Vice Chancellor for Student Services Jack Tharp, Ed.D., fondly remembered working with the Manlys to develop the Jane Wilden Manly Scholarship endowment. He also recalled Mrs. Manly's interest in art and her involvement in student government while she attended IU Kokomo.

From 1969–1986, William Manly was a senior executive of Kokomo's Union Carbide/Stellite Division and Cabot Corporation, which purchased Stellite in 1970. He began his career as a metallurgist at Union Carbide's Oak Ridge (Tenn.) National Laboratory. In 1965, Manly went to New York City as Stellite Division's director of technology. He became general manager of new products and refractory metals for a newly formed Materials Systems Division, and, in 1968, he was named division vice president.

Manly came to Kokomo in 1969 as general manager of Stellite, and remained as chief executive officer when Cabot Corporation acquired Stellite in 1970. He was promoted to group vice president for engineered products, overseeing a number of Cabot operations in the United States and abroad. Subsequently, Manly was elected a director of Cabot and served as senior vice president and, finally, executive vice president. William Manly served on several technical teams of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.

IU Kokomo Director of Donor Relations Cheryl Currens noted that the Manlys “used one of the most common means of making a charitable gift,” through a “planned gift” set out in their will. “There are many ways to give back to your alma mater,” Currens said. “You can give outright gifts or pledges, stocks, and planned gifts. Contributions can be designated to support your school of study, campus projects, and scholarships, or they can be unrestricted, allowing the university to direct funds where needed.”

Full-time students who demonstrate need of assistance can apply for renewable Jane Wilden Manly Scholarships. For more information on applications, contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid at (765) 455-9216.
