  Radiography program earns maximum accreditation

May 19, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) has awarded the maximum level of three years' initial accreditation to the associate degree in radiography program at Indiana University Kokomo. The JRCERT accredits specific allied health education programs, with oversight from the Federal Department of Education.

IU Kokomo launched its first stand-alone classes in radiography in 2003, preparing students for careers as technicians in medical imaging for hospitals and other health care facilities. The first 11 degrees in radiography will be conferred at IU Kokomo this summer.

IU Kokomo's Director of Radiologic Sciences John Hughey, M.S.M., R.T., (R.), explained that new educational programs in radiography that pass the JRCERT's peer evaluation process can be awarded from one to three years of accreditation. “In order to receive the initial three-year award, a program must not receive any recommendations for improvements from their JRCERT site visitors,” he said. “We did not.” For continued accreditation, programs must demonstrate continued levels of educational excellence and also develop and implement strategies for assessing program outcomes.

According to JRCERT rules, no initial program can be awarded more than three years' accreditation, Hughey noted.

“We are very pleased with the work performed by the faculty in obtaining the maximum accreditation possible,” said Robert Roales, Ph.D., chairperson of the Division of Allied Health Sciences. He thanked Hughey and Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiography Heidi Sebastian Thomason for their work in preparing documentation for the accreditation visits and their work with the JCERT team.
