IU Kokomo singled out two students for their commitment to the campus and the community. Communication arts major Lesa Beals of Kokomo received the 2005 Outstanding Student Leader Award. Vice Chancellor for Student Services Jack Tharp, Ed.D., described Beals as “a student who has found a balance between her family obligations and her dedication to pursuing her degree. She has been a leader on the speech team and The Correspondent [the campus newspaper] as well as working in the Office of the Registrar.” A nomination letter written on Beals' behalf said that “she always maintains a positive attitude and has a positive effect on those around her.” Currently a senior, Beals has been named co-assistant editor of The Correspondent for fall 2005 semester. She expects to complete her degree work in December 2005. Off campus, she is a summer volunteer with Equiventure.

Tharp also presented the 2005 Student Community Service Award to Amelissa James of Logansport. The award recognizes the nominee's dedication to the service of others, as well as the amount of time spent in service projects.

James graduated with high academic distinction in May, receiving a Bachelor of Art in Psychology. She minored in women's studies. James served as a Gear Up Program Mentor, helping young students with academic and social adjustment to campus. Tharp noted her “long list of involvement in the community, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Americorp Tutor Program, Cass County Democrats,” and her recent completion of an internship with a domestic violence program in Kokomo. “We truly can not think of another individual who deserves this award more than Amelissa James,” Tharp said.
