Flores takes first place at IU Kokomo Gallery

May 26, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—Terry Flores of Peru High School earned the $400 first place award in the 10th annual High School Exhibition at the Indiana University Kokomo Art Gallery. Featuring more than 80 works of art by area seniors, the exhibition is on display through June 12. Participating high schools included Kokomo, Kokomo Christian, Marion, Northwestern, Peru, Taylor, and Western.

Jurors Jerry Costello of Kokomo and Melissa Parrot of Indianapolis selected Flores' painting Casey vs. Matt, an oil on canvas, as the top work of the show (pictured left). Grant Horner of Western High School took second place and a $200 award for an untitled acrylic painting on board. Missy Fincher of Taylor High School won the third place award of $200 for a ceramics piece, House 2.

A former art teacher, Costello said the diversity of media and subject matter “makes the show interesting for everyone, regardless of their personal artistic preferences.

“I found the quality of the work in this show exciting,” Costello said. “I believe this speaks well, not only of the students' talents, but also of their teachers' abilities to inspire, nurture, and develop these talents.”

The jurors awarded $50 merit prizes to

Lezley Keppler, Marion High School, for Tall Tea Pot, ceramics

Anna Leslie, Marion High School, for a yarn weaving

Michael Marley, Western High School, for an untitled work in ceramics

Mollee Mohr, Kokomo Christian School, for an untitled mixed media collage

Leah Williams, Peru High School, for Childhood Memories, crayon

Erin Eads, Western High School, for an untitled watercolor

Marion students Natasha Kroma and Chris Fitzjarrald received honorable mention recognition—Kroma for a mixed media sculpture, African Woman, and Fitzjarrald for an untitled intaglio print. A reed basket created by Fitzjarrald earned a Choice Award from juror Melissa Parrott. Costello presented his Choice Award to Terry Flores, for a watercolor, My Girlfriend.

Dr. John Ladd of Ladd Dental Group, Kokomo, donated $2,000 to the Gallery for the cash prizes and to pay juror expenses. Additional support for the exhibition came from the Kokomo Community Arts Commission.
