KOKOMO, Ind.—Eight Indiana University Kokomo students made presentations at the 19th Annual Butler University Undergraduate Research Conference at Indianapolis in April.

Involving more than 650 students from across the country representing multiple academic disciplines, the conference is “one of the most prestigious” showcases for undergraduate work in the nation, according to faculty sponsor and Assistant Professor of English Terri Bourus, Ph.D.

Bourus mentored local students presenting on topics in literature, and Professor Robert Strikwerda, Ph.D., mentored students in his field, philosophy.

Junior Chad Andrews of Sharpsville made presentations in both categories, on the topics “Snow, Smoke, and Mirrors: Perception as Allegory in Kawabata’s Snow Country” and “The Zen of Nietzsche.”

Other student presenters and their topics were
Jeremy Ghazaleh of Kokomo, “Lewis and Pullman: Creation and the Fall”
Donna Hamilton of Walton “Made in the Likeness of God: Two Voices in the Quest for Human Spirituality”
Candace Jones of Kokomo, “ ‘Imagination all Compact:’ How a Graphic Novelist Converses with the Bard”
Diana Klueh of Kokomo, “Imparting Religious Principles in Children’s Literature: From Didacticism to Fantasy”
Nichole Péna of Tipton, “ ‘And by the way, let us recount our dreams:’ Seeing Shakespeare’s Hidden Dream in Bottom’s Soliloquy”
John Stanifer of Kokomo, “Deep Magic: A Literary Study of Forgiveness”
Samuel Thompson of Peru, “Huxley’s Psychedelic Visionary State and the Zen Mind”

Bourus commended the students’ work. “To quote the conference mission, these scholars ‘demonstrate the initiative to engage the world of ideas in a more intense manner, and they assume the risk of presenting their works in public,’ ” she said.
