IU Kokomo Commencement: From the Desk of the Chancellor
May 5, 2008
Kokomo, IN--Tomorrow marks a significant moment in our history at Indiana University Kokomo. Although our campus was founded in 1945, degrees were not awarded until 1969. In that year, 20 students received the A.S.N. degree. In subsequent years, we added numerous other degrees at the associate, baccalaureate, and master’s level. Tomorrow we will grant 33 master’s degrees, 298 bachelor’s degrees, and 210 associate degrees. We have our first bachelor’s graduates in early childhood education and medical imaging and our first M.P.M. graduates.
Tomorrow, we will award 109 A.S.N. degrees; these will be the last A.S.N. graduates to participate in campus’ commencement ceremonies. With this change, and the gradual phasing out of other associate degree programs, we will continue to move closer to our goal of becoming a fully baccalaureate institution. This year we will graduate 81 B.S.N.’s, our largest bachelor’s degree program. I have every expectation that our B.S.N. program will continue to grow and replace the A.S.N.’s we will no longer graduate, and I believe we will see increases in our other bachelor’s degree enrollments as well.
As we bid farewell to one of our most central programs, we owe a debt of gratitude to all of those on our campus who have helped to make this degree program a success as well as to the members of the larger community who have assisted with the clinical portions of the degree. Together, we have made a significant impact on north central Indiana.
