IU Kokomo offers three spring break classes in London

November 24, 2003

KOKOMO, Ind.—Come face to face with British history, theatre and culture, in three IU Kokomo classes built around a March 12–20, 2004, trip to London, England. Course enrollment is not required to take the trip. However, travel accommodations are limited, and preference will be given to enrolled students.

Students in the 3 credit hour course Studies in British and Commonwealth Culture will visit William Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford upon Avon, and Britain’s National Theatre. The class will meet at IU Kokomo three weeks before the trip and one week after.

The other two courses offer 1 credit hour each; they meet in Kokomo one week before and one week after the trip. While in London, those taking the course British Orators—Churchill and Thatcher will tour Parliament, Speaker’s Corner and Chartwell, Winston Churchill’s residence. Tea at Brown’s Hotel and antiquing along Portobello Road are among the “assignments” for students in the course Comparing British and American Cultures.

All trip participants will attend at least one theatrical performance in London and will stay at the Thistle Victoria Hotel.

IU Kokomo faculty members Catherine Barnes, Terri Bourus, Sue Sciame-Giesecke and Karla Farmer Stouse will lead the classes and tour group.

March is “off-season” for tourist trade in London, which should translate to smaller crowds and shorter waits at popular landmarks, Farmer Stouse said. Other attractions, she said, include winter sales at well-known British stores, such as Fortnum and Mason’s.

In addition to tuition and enrollment fees, the London trip costs $1,037 per person. This covers travel on U.S. Airways, hotel, transfers, breakfasts, and taxes. Estimated cost for mandatory medical/trip cancellation insurance is $50–$75. Travelers should anticipate another $400–$500 costs for additional meals, excursions and shopping.

Registration for any of the London classes must be made by Monday, December 1, through the IU Kokomo Office of the Registrar (Web site iuk.edu/registrar). A $150 deposit to U.S. Airways must be paid before that date. The full $1,037 cost of the trip must be paid no later than January 15, 2004.
