KOKOMO, Ind.—IU Kokomo Nursing Students will present a retrospective on AIDS patient and activist Ryan White Monday, December 2, from 1–3 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium. Working with associate professor of nursing Nancy Schlapman, Ph.D., the students have researched and will discuss the issues of White’s case and the physical and social contributions to health care that were afforded by his situation. Jane MacIntyre, a registered nurse with the Howard County Health Department will also make a brief presentation on HIV testing. Ryan White was born, lived and attended school in Kokomo. He was infected by the AIDS virus through tainted blood products that he received for hemophilia. After his diagnosis in 1984, the teenager crusaded to remain in school despite vocal public opposition that captured national headlines. White’s family eventually moved to Cicero, Indiana, where he died at age 18 in April 1990. The presentations are being made in connection with World AIDS Day, observed December 1. An AIDS information table and poster presentations will be set up outside of Kresge to display work done by Schlapman’s students.
