‘Child’s Christmas in Wales’ captures old-time memories

KOKOMO, Ind.—Snowball fights, dozing uncles happily stuffed with Christmas dinner, and a crackling Yule log. These are some of the nostalgic elements of Dylan Thomas’ short story “A Child’s Christmas in Wales,” set in the small sea-side town where the poet grew up in the 1920s. IU Kokomo’s University Theatre will present a theatrical adaptation of “A Child’s Christmas” Friday–Sunday, December 12–14, in Havens Auditorium. Tickets are $5. Performances will be at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Call (765) 455-9248 to reserve seats. First presented on BBC Radio, “A Child’s Christmas” depicts what has been called “an old-fashioned picture book Christmas . . . familiar to everyone.” “The play is all about family and tradition,” said Ed Faunce, a communications arts major from Tipton, who co-wrote the play’s script with Associate Professor of Communication Arts Colin Black. “We have chosen to employ a technique of group narration, so that a cast of nine performers relates and enacts Thomas’ Christmas memories,” Black said. “Traditional songs—performed by the IUK Singers—are interwoven into the spoken text.” Working under IU Undergraduate Research Summer Institute grants, Faunce and criminal justice major Ashlin Garber of Kokomo spent 10 weeks this summer researching Thomas’ work and planning its theatrical presentation. Garber and Lecturer in Music Cindy Ison will coordinate the show’s musical components and costuming. The production will even include “snow” falling onto the stage, Ison promised. Student cast members are Jennifer Stackhouse of Peru, Erik Homkes of Russiaville, and Kokomo residents Jonathan Kenworthy, Derrick Krober, Carri Luster, Silas Murphy, Jennifer Short, Chris Stout, and Tyrone Van Tatenhove, Afternoon with the Arts The Sunday, December 14, performance of “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” will kick off an Afternoon with the Arts, featuring numerous campus arts offerings. After the 2 p.m. show, light refreshments will be provided outside the IU Kokomo Art Gallery in the Kelley Student Center (starting time, approximately 3 p.m.). Visitors can tour the gallery’s Ninth Annual Elementary School Exhibition, featuring works by Howard County students. The gallery will also be hosting its Holiday Sale, featuring high-quality gift items made by regional artists. Admission to the gallery is free. At 4 p.m., the IUK Singers, under the direction of David Britton, and the IUK North Central Indiana Handbell Choir Ensemble, under the direction of June Beck, will present a holiday concert in Kresge Auditorium, across from the gallery. In addition to holiday carols, musical selections will include “And the Glory of the Lord” from Handel’s “Messiah,” a trio of spirituals, and a medley of Broadway tunes by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. Admission to the concert is $2. The public is welcome to all Afternoon with the Arts events. For additional information, contact Cindy Ison at lison@iuk.edu.
