Young Visions may point to scientific, as well as artistic, promise

November 14, 2003

KOKOMO, Ind.—Look closely at the work representing the theme, Young Visions, presented in the Eighth Annual Elementary School Exhibition, December 1–14 at the IU Kokomo Art Gallery. What you see might be more than just interesting artistic expression—you might see the roots of a future cancer cure or the next big leap in computer technology.

Arts advocate and professor of physiology at Michigan State University Robert Root-Bernstein, Ph.D., maintains that future scientific breakthroughs often grow out of imaginations stimulated by the arts. Gallery assistant Carri Luster cited Root-Bernstein’s ideas in a recent edition of the gallery newsletter, “Expressions.” According to Bernstein, “several studies of very successful scientists and engineers showed that ‘active participation and demonstrated ability in one or more of the arts are far more predictive of success in science than standard measures,’” Luster wrote. “If we let arts education atrophy in this country through lack of public support, we also will lose an important part of that creative base.”

Hence, Luster concluded, involvement in exhibits such as Young Visions not only encourages growth in knowledge of the arts, it also can help improve young students’ overall academic achievements,

This year’s elementary student exhibition will feature the works of Kokomo-area youth in grades 1–5. Five schools—Taylor, Indian Heights, Kokomo Christian, Redeemer Lutheran, and Sts. Joan of Arc and Patrick—as well as members of Kokomo Area Schools At Home will be represented

“This will be the first time the gallery has invited area private schools for the Elementary School exhibition, and we are excited about the addition,” said Director Minda Douglas. “This exhibition will be a very diverse show featuring the best of the visionary projects from each school.”

A reception honoring the Young Visions artists is planned Sunday, December 7, from 2–4 p.m. Concurrent with Young Visions, the gallery is presenting its Holiday Sale of handcrafted gift items, made by north central Indiana artists.

The IU Kokomo Art Gallery is located inside the Kelley Student Center; all gallery activities and exhibits are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Wednesdays, until 8 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays, noon–4 p.m.
