Brown to address helping divorced families cope

November 7, 2003

KOKOMO, Ind.—Joe H. Brown, Ph.D., developer of a pioneering program of court-mandated divorce education for families, will speak at Indiana University Kokomo on Thursday, November 13. Campus and community are welcome to attend a question-and-answer session with Brown at noon in the Main Building, Room 102, and a lecture at 2:30 p.m. in the Main Building, Room 104.

Brown will discuss the Families in Transition (FIT) program he helped create for Kentucky county courts in 1992. FIT requires both parents and children to attend educational sessions designed to teach the children how to cope with the emotional problems and social adjustments inherent to divorce. Based on its success, FIT has served as the model for a statewide system in Delaware, and has been adopted by the United States Army’s Family Ministries and 60 other communities in the United States, Ireland and South Africa.

Brown will also address his work as a consultant to Ireland’s family court system, begun after divorce became legal in that country in 1996.

The IU Academic Fellows Program and IU Kokomo’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs are sponsoring the presentations.

Karl Besel, Ph.D., professor of public affairs at IU Kokomo, previously worked with Joe Brown at the University of Louisville Kent School of Social Work. Brown has had “an extensive and distinguished academic career within the family courts field,” Besel said. “His scholarly exploits include publications in more than 30 peer-reviewed journals, and authoring or co-authoring six books.”
