KOKOMO, Ind.—Shop for gift items handmade by area artists during the IU Kokomo Art Gallery’s third annual Holiday Sale, November 16–December 14. All participating artists live in the 11 north central Indiana counties served by IU Kokomo, and all make their living through their craft. Many familiar artisans, as well as some new talent, will be featured, offering items made from blown glass, ceramics, turned wood, handmade paper, jewelry, and more. Featured artists include Christine Davis of Carmel, Denise Etchison of Frankton, Sylvia Gray of Westfield, Bob Hoshaw of Kokomo, artisans of KOG Hot Glass Studio, Terry and Fran Lacy of Delphi, Bridget Manning-Hamilton of Zionsville, Sharon Owens of Lafayette, Christina Roberts of Ladoga, Maureen Sharp of Rossville, Barbara Swain of Pendleton and Joanne Titolo of Battle Ground. The sale will be open during regular Gallery hours: Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Wednesdays, until 8 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays, noon–4 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public. (The Art Gallery will be closed November 27–30 for Thanksgiving break.) A new payment procedure this year will allow patrons to make purchases with credit cards. Patrons spending more than $100 at the sale will receive a donation acknowledgement letter, for 30 percent of the purchase, which can be filed for charitable tax exemption. “It is a ‘Win-Win-Win’ situation,” said Carri Luster, Art Gallery assistant. “Your purchases go to support the Art Gallery, local artists, and your friends and family, who will receive beautiful handmade items.” Buying from local artists benefits the local economy, Luster noted. “Non-profit arts organizations annually generate $134 billion dollars in spending,” she said. “Of this, $80.8 billion is spent by the more than 3.5 billion people attending community arts activities each year. The majority of this money purchases food, lodging, and transportation, enriching a community economically as well as culturally.”
The presence of local artists and arts organizations “inspires and enriches” local arts education, Luster added. Such inspiration is a major goal of the gallery’s annual exhibitions of art created by area high school and elementary school students. The Eighth Annual Elementary School Exhibition is planned December 1–14, concurrent with the Holiday Sale.
