KOKOMO, Ind.—An international journal, Platinum Metals Review, has published an article by IU Kokomo Professor of Chemistry Kasem K. Kasem, Ph.D., and his student Leslie Books Huddleston, describing their on-campus research in electrochemical studies on hexacynaometalates. The quarterly journal is published in London, England, and read by academics and “pure researchers,” Kasem said. “The Review knows me through my previous publications and solicited me to consider their journal as a venue for my publications,” Kasem said. What is unusual, he added, is Huddleston’s byline, recognizing her involvement in the research while still an undergraduate student at IU Kokomo. Working under an IU Undergraduate Research Summer Institute grant in 2002, Huddleston assisted Kasem in testing the durability of thin films of iridium-hexacyanoiridium (III) for use as semi-conductors and a catalyst to speed up some oxidation reduction reaction rates. Semi-conductors were originally designed to power such devices as rechargeable batteries and solar-powered calculators. Longer lasting semi-conductors could provide technical and economic advantages for industry, Kasem said. So, his ongoing research into these materials is “of great interest” to the Review’s readers, Kasem said.
