KOKOMO, Ind.—Six IU Kokomo students will go for the verbal gold Thursday, November 18, during the final round of the campus’ Speech Olympics. The public is invited to hear the students compete for cash prizes, starting at 7 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium. Admission is free. Kokomo Mayor Matt McKillip, State Representative Jim Buck, and former area legislator Ron Herrell will join IU Kokomo Chancellor Ruth Person in judging the Speech Olympics. Olympics coordinator Jaime Howell is a lecturer in communication arts and director of forensics and debate on campus. Howell said the competitors will present speeches designed to “create concern for a problem.” “Speech Olympics is an academic event that the Humanities Department has sponsored over the years, to distinguish superior public speaking students,” Howell said. During semifinal competition on Tuesday, November 16, two students will be selected from each of three Public Speaking classes to compete in the Thursday Olympics. For more information, contact Howell at (765) 455-9558 or jlhowell@iuk.edu.
