KOKOMO, Ind.—Dinosaur expert Jeffrey Wilson, Ph.D., will discuss his fossil-hunting expeditions for the National Geographic Society on Wednesday, December 8, at IU Kokomo. The School of Arts and Sciences’ Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (M.L.S.) program will sponsor Wilson’s 7 p.m. presentation in Hunt Hall, Room 116. Geared to audiences of preteen age and older, the free presentation is open to the public. Wilson is a University of Michigan assistant professor of geological sciences and assistant curator at the university’s Museum of Paleontology. His studies have involved travel to Niger and India in collaboration with paleontologist Paul Sereno of the University of Chicago. Wilson has appeared in a number of televised National Geographic documentaries on dinosaurs. IU Kokomo Associate Professor of Biology Michael Finkler, Ph.D., invited Wilson to address the M.L.S. class. “Dr. Wilson is an internationally recognized expert on sauropod dinosaurs, such as apatosaurus, brachiosaurus, and diplodocus,” Finkler said. “He’ll be talking about the biomechanics that allowed these long-necked dinosaurs to walk around. He’ll also bring some small fossil samples to the lecture.” While many dinosaur fossils have been discovered in North America, Wilson has focused his research in less studied sites, such as the Sahara Desert, according to Finkler. “Dr. Wilson actually has a few new species of dinosaurs named to his credit,” Finkler said. Weekday guests to campus who do not have an IU Kokomo parking pass are asked to park in the lower level of the parking garage, located on the south end of campus. Parking is free.
