Satiric fables on stage in Story Theatre

November 10, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—The Indiana University Theatre will present the comic musical revue Story Theatre November 18–20 in Havens Auditorium. The curtain rises at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 18, and Saturday, November 19, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 20. Admission is $7; call 455-9248 to reserve seats.

Associate Professor of Communication Arts Colin Black is directing Story Theatre. Black explained that Paul Sills, a founding member of Chicago's Second City Improv theatre group, adapted Brothers Grimm fairy tales and Aesop's fables for Story Theatre's short sketches. “This original theatre work reflected values and issues of the late 1960s, the period when it was written,” Black said. “The dynamic political atmosphere of the time provided the perfect backdrop for the power-hungry fisherman's wife, the class struggles reflected in 'The Little Peasant,' and the consequences of blindly following a leader, as evidenced in 'Henny Penny.'

Story Theatre still appeals to current audiences, for its timeless stories continue to resonate and comment on our own times,” Black said.

The cast includes Lecturer in Communication Arts Chris Clemens; alumna Coleen Kebrdle; and students Amanda Dunlap, Caleb Harvey, Jonathon W. Kenworthy, Josh Summers, and Tyrone VanTatenhove, all communication arts majors; Monique Ethier, English major; Shannon Layton, biology major; and Carri Luster, humanities major. Musicians include David Britton on keyboard; Eric Rode, bass; and Troy Jones, percussion. Stage crew members are Jeff Gegner, Harrison Chapel, Shannon Driver, and Alex Keenan.
