School of Business earns fourth McGowan Award

November 22, 2006

KOKOMO, Ind.—The McGowan Charitable Foundation has awarded a fourth consecutive scholarship to the Indiana University Kokomo School of Business, to cover a full-year’s tuition for a student. Faculty members will designate a recipient for the $12,506 McGowan Scholar Award from undergraduates enrolled in the 2007–2008 academic year and scheduled to graduate in May 2008.

“It is a great honor that the McGowan Foundation has awarded IU Kokomo $54,895 over the last four award cycles in this competitive funding,” said School of Business Dean Nirajan Pati, Ph.D. From 2004–2007, IU Kokomo secured two McGowan scholarships for Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) students, awarded to Erin Wittmeyer of Plymouth and Scott Voorhis of Greentown, and an earlier scholarship for an undergraduate, awarded to Rob Jones of Elwood.

Eligibility for the McGowan Scholar Award is open only to schools of business accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International—as is IU Kokomo’s—or the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs.

William G. McGowan, who founded MCI Communications in 1968 and led the company until his death in 1992, established the McGowan Charitable Foundation. McGowan attended Harvard University graduate school on a scholarship set up much like the McGowan Scholar Award.

Diana Spencer, executive director of the McGowan Charitable Foundation, recently asked Dean Pati to write a motivational note to alumni of the scholarship program for the foundation’s August 2006 newsletter.
